CASE EXAMPLES

The following selective case examples illustrate the use of 1) a child-centered play group with child survivors from a devastating earthquake in an elementary school and 2) a Gestalt play therapy group with a middle school student with a hidden trauma.

SYNOPSIS OF CHILD-CENTERED GROUP PLAY THERAPY

Session 1 Emma, Kathy, and Linda, all fifth-graders, were referred to a school counselor after schoolwide instrumental screenings. They entered a playroom with the counselor. The playroom was set up in a school building, which was not damaged by the earthquake.

COUNSELOR: All of you can play with the toys in this room in any way you like.

KATHY: [Following Linda and walking around.] There are a lot of toys!

COUNSELOR: You are surprised, Kathy! [While Kathy and Linda continued to touch several toys but were not serious with any of them, Emma moved much more slowly and did not say any words throughout this session.]

COUNSELOR: Feel free to play with them if you want.
